UPDATE: October 21, 6:52 pm

Wetaskiwin RCMP would like to advise the public that Highway 2 northbound has reopened for travel.

Though still early in the investigation, preliminary findings reveal that a semi-truck was parked on the side of the road due to mechanical issues. The driver, a 24-year-old resident of Winnipeg, was placing security cones around the semi-truck when he was struck by a northbound vehicle.

He was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the other vehicle, who is not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time, stayed on scene and waited to speak with responding officers.

BACKGROUND STORY:

Wetaskiwin RCMP are currently on scene or a fatal motor vehicle collision with a pedestrian.

RCMP advise that northbound Highway 2, as of Highway 611, will be closed until further notice while investigation is ongoing. The public is told to also expect slower traffic on southbound Highway 2 in that area and are asked to seek alternate routes of travel.

RCMP anticipate remaining on scene for several hours.

An update will be released once the highway reopens and more information becomes available.
