Fire crews continue to investigate the cause of the large structure fire that took place at Complete K9, a local dog food processing plant located on the corner of Highway 12 and Range Road 255 on May 5th.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

“Looks like it started in the back of the building, but the investigation is ongoing, right now,” said Lacombe Fire Department Chief, Dennis Cole.

Lacombe, Clive, and Blackfalds Fire Departments responded to the fire along with Lacombe Police Services. Fire crews remained on scene from 3:30PM until 12:30 AM this morning (May 6) but the fire was under control within three hours.

“Initially, the wind was a contributing factor to the fast fire spread through the building. Once we got it controlled and [the building] was knocked down, it settled down pretty good. We did end up having a couple of small grass fires across the highway, due to some flying embers,” he explained.

Only one of the buildings at the property had been damaged by the blazes.

“We did provide some exposure protection to the house that was adjacent to the building and the house was not damaged,” said Cole.

Cole was happy to report that no one was injured in the fire.

“By the time we got there, everybody two legged and four legged were all accounted for,” he added.

Crews on scene were also able to take care of the incident without injury.

“It was determined right away that there was to be no entry into the building with the fire showing up through the building. Crews kept their distance and we ended up applying about 500,000 liters of water onto it,” added Cole.
