The City of Red Deer has announced that a municipal by-election will be held this April following the passing of Councillor Michael Dawe.

“The City is incredibly saddened by the loss of Councillor Michael Dawe. This has unfortunately created a vacancy on Council that we are required to fill within 120 days,” said Jessica Robinson, Returning Officer for The City of Red Deer. “The Municipal Government Act requires us to fill that vacancy because we are more than 18 months away from the next municipal election.”

Nominations will begin to be accepted on January 23, 2024 and the nomination period will end on March 25, 2024. For more information on candidacy, click here.  The election will be held on April 22, 2024.

City Council has also decided to cancel the municipal census that was being planned for 2024. Having both the by-election and census was determined to put too much strain on staff, budget, and recruitment efforts for temporary staff.
