The Lacombe and District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is offering many programs this winter and holiday season to help local families enjoy the holidays.

Among those programs, Fill-A-Fridge is quite popular and gives families the opportunity to pick out the food that they need or desire.

“They have to meet an income criteria to qualify and then they get specialized grocery certificates to use at our local grocery stores and it is a a very special partnership with the grocery stores... They get to choose their own food and with those special voucher and they can use them in Lacombe or the county,” said Crystal Zens, Executive Director of the Lacombe and District FCSS.

Zens says the program wouldn’t be possible without the support of the local grocery stores.

“It's a lot of extra effort on their part and we really appreciate their willingness to work with us for that program,” she added.

Inflation is continuing to add extra pressure on local families and Zens is anticipating increased need for the Fill A Fridge program.

“The applications are on the rise. I think the cost of living is rising so quickly and people's salaries or wages aren't keeping up with it so yeah, we are bracing for a higher needs,” said Zens.

Families can sign up for or donate for programs like Fill A Fridge, Santa’s Anonymous, or Coats for Kids by visiting the Lacombe FCSS website.
