Open Farm days are happening this weekend throughout Alberta and it will be your chance to see how your food is produced live and in person. Local producers will be opening up their farms for tours and demonstrations.

“This year we've got over 130 host farms and unique experiences across Alberta that are participating, so there's something for everybody,” said Tim Carson, CEO of Alberta Agricultural Societies.

This will be the 11th year of operating the event and Carson says every year Open Farm Days is growing into new parts of Alberta. In the central Alberta area, there are plenty of experiences to take in.

“It's really a very easy spot to go and find some really unique experiences from U-Picks, to dairy farms, to I think there's even some bison ranches, and alpacas out in your neighborhood as well,” added Carson.

This year, Alberta Open Farm Days is trying throw a special light on bison producers.

“There are over 470 bison ranches here in Alberta and that constitutes nearly 50 per cent of all the bison ranches in Canada. It is really a big part of agriculture here in in Alberta. I think it's just a great opportunity again to show the diversity of our agriculture industry, how we are able to manage these big majestic animals. If you've never seen a bison up close, I highly suggest you take in that opportunity,” explained Carson.

Carson recommends the following tips when visiting farms this weekend:

  • Don’t wear flip flops
  • Bring a cooler with you
  • Don’t bring pets

“Many of our host farms provide fresh from the producer items to take home and meats, vegetables, fruits, things of that nature that you'll be able to pack on your way and take home,” added Carson.

Open Farm Days is happening Saturday August 19th and Sunday, August 20th. You can view a full map of participating farms by clicking here.
