Improvements to 19 Street between Gaetz Avenue and Irwin Avenue in Red Deer is expected to be underway in the coming weeks.

Over the summer, crews will focus on the rehabilitation of a section of 19 Street between Gaetz Avenue and 49 Avenue.

Crews will also work on completing a new roundabout at the intersection of 19 Street and 40 Avenue.

To complete the roadwork in the safest and most efficient way, the intersection will be closed to north and south traffic, and no left turns will be permitted at the intersection during roundabout construction.

To ensure the safety of trail users while heavy equipment operates, walking trails in the area will be temporarily closed throughout construction.

“This traffic accommodation strategy will allow contractors to work on the roundabout safely while traffic continues to flow smoothly through the area,” said Christine Villeneuve, Project Manager with The City of Red Deer. “We know large projects like this can have a negative impact on businesses and residents within the construction zone, so it is important for us to ensure access is maintained throughout the project and these short detours allow for that.”

Work is beginning in the coming days, with crews mobilizing the site and setting up detours. Intermittent lane closures will be in place for the work and detours are expected to start in early June.

Construction work between Gaetz Avenue and 49 Avenue is expected to start in late May or early June, weather depending.

During work, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. The intersection of 19 Street and 49 Avenue will remain open throughout  construction.
